    • Description

Nobody who fits one goes back to using toilet paper

That's the thing about shower toilets. People spend weeks deciding whether they can justify one, and about a fortnight later they're wondering how they managed before — and quietly planning one for the second bathroom.

The logic isn't complicated. You wouldn't clean any other part of your body with dry paper. Most of the world already worked this out; Britain is simply late to it. The Geberit AquaClean Alba washes with a stream of warm, aerated water at the press of a button, then you're done. Cleaner, gentler, and no more scrubbing at yourself with something that was never designed for the job.

      It doesn't look like anything

Here's what puts most people off before they start: the mental image of a chunky plastic contraption bolted onto the loo, with a control panel, in the middle of a bathroom you've just spent good money on.

The Alba isn't that. It's a slim, rimless, wall hung ceramic pan that looks like a well-chosen designer WC and nothing else. The washing mechanism lives inside the ceramic. The spray arm appears when you need it and disappears when you don't. The control is a neat wireless remote that mounts discreetly on the wall, or lives on a shelf.

Guests use your bathroom and notice a nice toilet. That's it.

What it's actually like to use

Sit down. Press one button. A slim arm extends and washes you with warm, aerated water for around twenty seconds — Geberit's WhirlSpray system mixes air into the stream, so it's a soft, pulsating spray rather than a jet. The water is heated on demand between 34°C and 40°C, so it's warm from the first second, not the tenth.

An oscillating setting moves the arm gently back and forth for a more thorough clean. Five pressure levels and five arm positions mean it's set up once to suit you, through the free Geberit Home app, and then it's just there — one button, every day, for years.

Then the rimless TurboFlush takes over: water spirals around the bowl rather than falling from a rim, which flushes more thoroughly and considerably more quietly. Most owners find the toilet brush more or less retires.

Worth every penny of the difference

Be honest about the sum: this costs more than a standard WC. But you're not comparing it against a £150 toilet — you're comparing it against a £150 toilet plus the daily experience of not having one.

      • It's the entry point, not the flagship. Geberit build far more expensive shower toilets. The Alba was designed to get the price down to where ordinary households can say yes, while keeping the parts that matter — the WhirlSpray wash, the rimless flush, the app control.
      • You're buying it once. This is Geberit: Swiss, 150 years old, the company whose cisterns sit inside half the walls in Europe. Their concealed frames are famous for being the thing you never have to think about again.
      • Fit it when the bathroom's open. The single cheapest moment to install a shower toilet is when the wall is already coming off. Retrofitting later means finding a mains supply and re-tiling. If you're refurbishing now, this is the decision to make now.
      • Standby costs pennies. Economy mode holds it under 0.5W.

For anyone who finds reaching difficult, this changes the day

Bending, twisting and reaching are the movements that go first — after hip or knee surgery, with arthritis, during pregnancy, or simply with age. It's a small, private difficulty that people rarely raise, and it wears away at independence faster than almost anything else in the house.

A shower toilet takes that problem away. One button, warm water, done — no flexibility, no grip strength, no one else in the room.

      • The remote is genuinely one-handed. Large buttons, no cables, mounted within easy reach or kept on a shelf. A carer can use it as easily as the user.
      • No smartphone required. The app sets pressure, temperature and arm position — that's a one-off job someone else can do. Day to day, it's the remote and nothing more.
      • Wall hung means you pick the height. The pan mounts to a concealed frame, so your installer sets the seat height to suit the person using it. That one decision is often the difference between an independent transfer and an assisted one.
      • Clear floor beneath. Nothing to catch a footplate on, easier access for a wheelchair user or a carer alongside, and far easier to clean.
      • User detection means the spray only runs when the seat is occupied.
      • Supports up to 150kg.
      • And it looks like an ordinary toilet. No hospital blue, no grab-handle aesthetic, nothing to explain to visitors. For a lot of families that dignity is the whole point.

You may be able to buy this without VAT

If you are chronically sick or disabled and the toilet is for your own personal or domestic use, this purchase can be zero-rated for VAT. That takes it from £875.00 to £729.17 — a saving of £145.83. It isn't a discount we're offering, it's a relief you're entitled to under HMRC rules, and it applies whether you're buying for yourself or a family member is buying on your behalf. You'll complete a short eligibility declaration during checkout; no proof or doctor's letter is required, and you don't need to be registered disabled.

Specifying it for a disabled user

If you're planning an adaptation rather than a straight replacement, these are the details worth settling before anything is ordered.

      • Seat height. Because the pan hangs on a concealed frame, the seat height is whatever you set it to. Building guidance for wheelchair-accessible WCs works to around 480mm to the top of the seat, against roughly 400–420mm for a standard domestic toilet. Ambulant users who struggle to lower themselves often want something between the two. Decide this with the person who'll use it before the frame goes in — it can't be changed afterwards without opening the wall.
      • Transfer space. For a side transfer from a wheelchair you want clear space beside the pan, not just in front of it. The Alba is 375mm wide and projects 565mm, so it's compact, but the layout around it is what determines whether a transfer works.
      • Grab rails. These need noggins or a proper backing board fixed before boarding and tiling. Even if rails aren't needed today, putting the fixings in now costs almost nothing and saves ripping tiles off in two years.
      • Where the remote goes. It's wireless and mounts on a bracket, so it can sit exactly where the user's hand naturally falls — on the transfer side, at a height they can reach seated. Think about this rather than accepting wherever the fitter puts it.
      • Carer operation. Nothing about the controls assumes the person pressing the button is the person on the toilet. A carer can operate it standing alongside.
      • Funding. If the adaptation is being assessed by an occupational therapist, a shower toilet can form part of a Disabled Facilities Grant application. Worth asking your OT or local council before you buy privately — the process is slow, but the money is real.

Adapting an existing bathroom? Ring us on 03333 445 932. We'll work through frame heights, grab rails, transfer space and layout with you, your fitter, or your occupational therapist — and we'd far rather have that conversation before you order than after.

      What's in the box

Pan and soft close seat, wireless remote control with wall bracket and battery, water supply connection set for Geberit Sigma and Omega 12cm concealed cisterns (112cm installation height), mains connection socket, sound insulation set and fixings.

Installation: frames, cisterns and power supply

The Alba works with a Geberit concealed frame and 12cm Sigma or Omega cistern, ordered separately. Don't guess — send us a photo of what's on site, or call, and we'll tell you exactly what you need.

The water supply enters on the left and the mains cable on the right, both concealed behind the ceramic, so a fused connection must reach the wall before it's boarded and tiled. External connections are possible with accessories. A competent plumber and a qualified electrician between them will have this in without drama.

Straight talking: the Alba is Geberit's most discreet AquaClean, not the most loaded. There's no warm air dryer and no heated seat ring. Odour extraction isn't built into the pan either — but you can add it with the Geberit DuoFresh module, which fits inside the Sigma concealed cistern and draws odours away at source through a carbon filter. It's an option above, and it has to go in at the same time as the cistern, so decide now rather than later. If you want the dryer and heated seat as well, look at the Tuma Comfort or Mera Comfort — or ring us and we'll tell you honestly whether they're worth the jump for how you'd use it.

      Frequently asked questions

Does it need an electrical supply?

Yes — 230V, with a fused connection behind the ceramic or an external socket to the right of the pan. Plan it before the wall is boarded.

Is the cistern and frame included?

No. You get the pan, seat and the connection set. The matching Geberit Sigma 112cm frame and cistern is an option above — that's the one built for this pan's connections, so you can tick it and be certain everything marries up.

      Is the water actually warm?

Yes — 34°C to 40°C, heated within the unit, warm from the start of the spray. This is the question everyone asks and the answer is the one that changes minds.

Can someone without a smartphone use it?

Easily. Everything day-to-day runs from the remote. The app is only for changing saved settings, which someone can do once on their behalf.

      Does it have a dryer?

No — that's the Tuma Comfort and Mera Comfort. The Alba keeps the price down by focusing on the wash itself. Odour extraction can be added, though, using the DuoFresh module in the cistern.

How much weight will it take?

150kg on the seat. As with any wall hung WC, the frame carries the load, so it must be properly fixed to a sound wall.

Can I buy this VAT free?

Yes, if you're chronically sick or disabled and it's for your own personal or domestic use — £729.17 instead of £875.00. You declare eligibility at checkout. No proof or doctor's letter needed.

What seat height should I set it to?

Your choice, because it hangs on a frame. Standard domestic is around 400–420mm; accessible guidance works to around 480mm. Settle it before the frame is fixed — changing it later means opening the wall.

Is it hygienic if several people use it?

The nozzle rinses itself with fresh water automatically before and after every use, and it never contacts you. It's cleaner than what it replaces.
