How to Easily Make Your Bathroom Smell Fresh and Clean

Bathrooms ? especially those which are limited in size or those located in older houses ? tend to have a negative trait. They may look great and be maintained, cleaned, and well-kept at all times, but the fact is that there tends to be a lot of moisture ? and after a few years, this tends to build up and show its negative effects. We?re talking about unpleasant odours, those from stale air, built-up dirt or mould, and spores. They're annoying, but they can be prevented. So how do we ensure our bathroom experience doesn't deteriorate? Here's how to easily make your bathroom smell fresh and clean.

Fresh air

Getting fresh air into the bathroom isn't just a matter of quality of air ? getting the old out and getting the new in. Of course you want that old, musty air out and fresh air in, but it's equally important to get the moisture content to a minimum. It's moisture in the bathroom that turns the room into a breeding ground for mould and mildew. Hang all towels out to dry. Open the window(s) regularly. If there are no windows you may want to consider placing a humidifier in your bathroom.

Of course, clean it

Yes, cleaning is unfortunately one of the least favourite activities to do in the bathroom, but it's a necessary evil and goes a long way to combat unpleasant odours. Grime, oils, and soap scum tend to build up near the drains, especially in showers, baths, and even whirlpool baths, and this can be a cause of bad smells as well. Mop the floors at least weekly, and keep sinks and drains free of standing water, toothpaste, soap suds and spilled toiletries at all times.

Eliminate the bad

If you notice some odd smells here and there, try to locate them and place some odour-absorbing or eliminating substances there. A cup of baking soda will often absorb and alleviate even the nastiest of smells. Cups of charcoal and activated carbon (what you see in water filters in aquaria) do the same trick.

Add the good

Of course, have some nice-smelling items at hand ? it always lightens the mood. Little packets of dry lavender, for example, provide a fresh smell. Scented candles are always a hit. Potpourri, citrus, and flowers are also great.

The fact that your bathroom smells a little less than perfect at certain times is absolutely normal. But in general, your bathroom should smell fresh and clean. This isn't just for the benefit of the bathroom itself, but also for experiencing the full health benefits and relaxation opportunities the privacy of a bathroom and a quality bathing session can offer. Opting to use an air spray is only a temporary solution. Regular upkeep is permanent.
