Some Simple Tips and Tricks for Improving the Ventilation and Air Circulation of Your Bathroom

Bathrooms are naturally damp and moist places, and this moisture and damp can easily build up and develop into mould or mildew after some time. That's why there are building codes which require windows or fans in a bathroom to aid in ventilation. But even if you have a window or a fan, the ventilation may still need a bit of help  especially if your bathroom is small or used often. We all know how important the proper ventilation is, because air that is too moist can encourage the growth of mould, resulting in ill health. So how can you improve the air circulation and ventilation in your bathroom? Here are some simple and easy tips and tricks.

  • One simple thing you can do is open a window whilst taking a shower or whilst using the vanity or toilet. Even if you just open your bathroom window a few inches, this can make a difference. If your windows are double-hung, just open the window sashes on the top and bottom. You can also open the door a tiny bit whilst taking a shower so that you can draw air from inside your house.
  • Another tip would be to purchase a small fan and install it on the sill of your window (make sure the window is open). A desk fan or other small fan should do the trick; nowadays you can find fans which can be attached to the corners of doorways, and these fans come with screws so that you can screw them onto a wooden window sill or a wooden side trim. Just fix the fan in such a way that the window can still close when it is not being used.
  • A dehumidifier is also a handy and convenient way to enhance the ventilation and air flow in your bathroom; if you have one, place it in a discreet location. Most dehumidifiers are of an average size -they're similar to a toaster oven in size - so you should be able to find a place for it. A dehumidifier is especially useful during the winter season, as it can help do away with the moisture from the air. If you are planning to use a dehumidifier, however, make it a point to empty its reservoir for water daily.

You can also limit your use of the shower during the winter so as to minimise the accumulation of moisture and water vapour in your bathroom. If you have a steam shower, what you can do is regulate the temperature so the water is warm instead of hot; steam showers today come with thermostatic control valves for better and easier control, and this can help you improve your bathroom's ventilation as well.
