Cleaning & Maintaining a Walk In Bath
Because of the nature of walk in baths, many people may presume that opting for one makes cleaning the bathroom more difficult. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Yes, in order for your walk in bath to be maintained so it works properly and is safe for use, it’ll need regular cleaning; but this cleaning won’t differ much from a regular bath. In fact, thanks to the ‘walk in’ element of the bath, it can be even easier to clean!
To keep your bath safe and pristine, here are a few ways to clean and maintain it.
A pre-bath wipe over
If you’ve not used your bath for a few days, you may be surprised at how much dust can gather. And even if you clean your bath a few times per week, dirt and grime can still build up in the days that your bath is out of use.
Wiping your walk in bath over with a natural cleaning product, prior to use, can make sure you minimise any dirt and keep the bath, and its user, as safe as possible.
A post-bath clean
We always recommend cleaning your walk-in bath after you’ve had a good soak, or seated shower. If your bath has a shower head, you can easily remove it to help with the clean.
Cleaning post-bath will help you remove buildup such as soap scum. And doing this with warm water directly after a bath will make the end result much easier to achieve - saving you both time and hassle in the long-run.
A weekly clean
We know it can seem like a hassle, especially if you haven’t used your walk in bath much this week, but having a once weekly clean will remove any dirt/grime building up and make sure your bath is in perfect working order.
Setting a routine for your weekly clean might be a good idea too. For example, deciding that every Sunday morning you’re going to spend 20 minutes cleaning the bathroom. That way you’ll have a sparkling clean bathroom which will be fresh for the start of a new week.
Be sure to use mild detergents and avoid scratchy tools (such as wire brushes) as these can damage your walk-in bath. Just gently wash the surfaces and finer details within your bath using soft, circular motions; remembering to rinse away the soap afterwards.
If you’re keeping on top of your pre/post-bath cleans, you probably won’t have to work too hard on your weekly clean!
A monthly clean
Consider this your ‘spring clean’ of bath cleaning. This is your chance to get your rubber gloves out, put some music on and get into the nooks and crannies of your walk in bath. Think about surfaces, fixtures and so on.
There are a few ways you could approach this. For example, you could use non abrasive cleaning products and tools. Or you could fill your walk-in bath so the bottom fifth is full of water, add some detergent and run the jets (if you have them, for example on the Avrail walk in bath) for a few minutes. Then you’d just need rinse and wipe everything down to make sure that there’s no dirt or build-up leftover.
You could repeat this process once per month to keep your walk in bath fresh and clean.

Some additional tips for cleaning your walk in bath:
Tools and materials
It’s important to make sure you’re using the right tools and materials to promote the lifespan of your walk in bath. Here are a few extra tips:
- Use a good, non-scratch, non-toxic cleaner for cleaning your walk-in bath’s interior. Try and avoid polish as this could make the surfaces slippery when you later take a bath. A good quality shop-bought foaming/spray bath cleaner should do the job.
- If you’re feeling particularly creative, you could create your own cleaning solution by mixing water and vinegar (in equal parts) in a spray bottle.
- Some cleaning personalities suggest using bleach, especially when utilising your walk in bath’s jets. However, to be on the safe side and avoid fumes, we’d suggest using a liquid which has been specifically created for the task at hand.
- Don’t forget that bacteria needs moisture to grow. When you’re done bathing/cleaning, open a nearby window or use your extractor fan to remove the moisture from the room.
