7 Steps to a Sparkling Clean Shower Enclosure
Cleaning. You either love it or hate it. From whole house blitzes, to room-by-room cleans, a whole array of different tools and solutions can sometimes be required to get the job done.
Arguably, one of the hardest things to clean can sometimes be your glass shower screen. As specialists in luxury bathroom furniture and suppliers of frameless shower enclosures, we see it first-hand. Ironically, your shower screen tends to be one of the areas of your bathroom that is most noticeable when not cleaned properly (especially if you’ve opted for a frameless shower enclosure!).
As a result, here is a step-by-step guide to secure a sparkling clean shower screen.
1). Gather your cleaning equipment
Start with gathering everything you need. This could include your brand/solution of choice in a spray bottle, a scrubber, a squeegee, white vinegar, baking soda, cleaning creams, glass cleaner and a cloth/towel.
2). Wet your shower screen
Be careful not to soak your floor, but wetting your frameless shower enclosure will prepare the surface for cleaning.
3). Remove any dirt
If you have a buildup of dirt, find your solution of choice and spray it onto the glass. Some common choices of solution are white vinegar or more of a chemical ‘soap scum’ remover. If you’re opting to use a cream, work it in with a cloth.
4). Wait 10 minutes
Waiting 10 minutes will give the solution time to settle in and do its thing. Although if you’re using a packaged solution such as a chemical cleaner, you should always check the packaging instructions for direction.
5). Use a scrub sponge to remove the dirt
Once the solution has settled in, wet your scrub sponge and scrub the frameless shower enclosure. If you used white vinegar, you’ll probably want to dip the scrub sponge in baking soda here. This will act as an abrasive whilst the vinegar works its magic on your glass screen.
6). Wash the solution off
Once you’re confident that you’ve removed all the dirt, use water to rinse the solution off. This should be easy on the inside of your shower enclosure, but you may need to use water in a spray bottle on the outside.
7). Use your squeegee to remove the water
Running your squeegee from the top to bottom of your frameless shower enclosure, side to side, will remove any water droplets and leave you with a clear and clean finish.
Keeping frameless shower enclosures clean
You won’t need to conduct all of the above process every time you clean your frameless shower enclosure, especially if you keep on top of it - prevention is better than cure, after all. Here are a few simple maintenance tips to keep things sparkling!
1). Do a full clean (as above) once every few weeks
A buildup of dirt is inevitable, but doing a full scrub every few weeks will mean that the buildup doesn’t get too much.
2). Use a daily shower spray
You can purchase ‘spray and leave’ shower sprays that you can literally ‘spray and leave’ to work its magic on a daily basis. This will help prevent the daily buildup that occurs during the glass’ contact with shower gels, lotions, creams, water and general bathroom humidity.
3). Use a barrier solution/water repellent
If you do deal with a lot of dirt (or ‘soap scum’) in areas with hard water, you can apply a glass treatment such as Rain-X every few months. This acts as a barrier solution and water repellent.
4). Use a squeegee after every shower
Using a squeegee on frameless shower enclosures post-shower, will help prevent water droplets, keep the glass clear and prevent the buildup of soap scum.
A few extra tips for cleaning frameless shower enclosures
- Using glass cleaner
If, for example, you have guests coming over, you notice your shower screen looks a bit shabby and you only have time for a quick spritz, use a glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth to give your frameless shower enclosure a last minute freshen up.
- Wipe in an ‘S’ pattern
To avoid leaving streaks, a top tip is to wipe top to bottom in an ‘S’ pattern, and spray your glass cleaner onto your cloth, rather than the glass itself.
- Use lemons to clean your glass
Lemons (surprisingly) also make for a good shower cleaner due to the citric acid. Simply squeeze the juice out of two/three lemons, mix with distilled water, pour into a spray bottle, shake, spray, leave for a few minutes and use a microfiber cloth to clean.
