Three Different Methods For Adding Lighting In The Bathroom Under The Cabinets

Installing extra lighting is one of the easiest DIY jobs you can do in the bathroom. Installing the lighting under the cabinet for a night light for the kiddos is a great way to keep lighting cost down, and illuminate the bathroom at the same time. Rope lights cost a little more for the equipment but they will save you on your light bill so the trade-off can be very affordable.

This project is totally adjustable, and you can make several allowances and changes that are discussed below.

  • Materials
  • Tape measure
  • Ruler
  • Rope lighting kit
  • Coaxial Cable Clips
  • Command? Clear Medium Cord Clips
  • Cup hooks
  • Tools
  • Spade bit
  • Drill
  • Hammer or screwdriver
  • Nails
  • Wire cutter
  • Gather your materials

This project is really easy and you can make adjustments to meet your needs and even make it easier.

You will need enough rope lighting to cover your area. To determine how much light you will need measure the cabinet from each end that you would like the lights to cover.

You have a couple of choices when it comes to lights. You can use Rope lights with clips or you can use self-adhesive rope tape lights. This is your choice; most likely your decision will be affected by cost, ease of use and availability. Your rope light kit will include the rope lights, plastic end caps and male electrode spikes.

You can use Coaxial Cable Clips or command strips with hooks. The first requires the use of a drill and the appropriate spade bit.

If you are using the coaxial clips you will need a hammer or screwdriver to either nail the clips in place or a screwdriver to screw the clips in place.

How to install the self-adhesive rope lights

The self-adhesive lights are the most expensive lights to install, however they are the easiest to install. You simply apply the lights using the sticky backing on the lights. However you may want to have some extra support by using clear adhesive command tape or other industrial type supports so that the adhesive does not wear out and the lights begin to fall.

How to Install Command? Clear Medium Cord Clips

First you need to mark under the cabinet as a reference mark where you want the lights to hang. You will want clips every 5 to 6 inches. Thread the rope light through the command strip holder and apply the tape. Press firmly in place. Proceed to attaching the electrodes.

How to install using coaxial cable clips

Drill holes every 10 inches apart. You will want to use a spade bit that makes holes just large enough for the lights to pass through. Install the lights by threading through each hole. You will need to support the rope in between each hole by using cable clips. To attach clips you will need to place the clip over the cord and nail in place.

Attaching the Electrodes

You need to place a cap over the end that will not be near the electrical power source. On the opposite end you will need to install the male electrode spikes, these will go into the conductors that are on the rope light. Make sure to connect the male connector securely.

You will then connect the female connector that is attached to the power cord to the male connector that is attached to the rope light. Tighten the connectors in place securely so they will not come apart. Secure these remaining ends to the cabinet and then plug in your lights.
